After training as a singer and pursuing a long career in opera stage management, Paul made his directorial debut at the Dorset Opera Festival in 2012, directing Lord Berners' Le Carrosse du Saint-Sacrement in a double bill with Suor Angelica.
Since then, he has returned to direct Der Fliegende Hollรคnder, Aida, Un Ballo in Maschera, Eugene Onegin, Don Giovanni, The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), and the world premiere of his own opera Under the Greenwood Tree, commissioned by the festival for its 50th anniversary in 2024.
For the Netherlands Reisopera, he has directed Amahl and the Night Visitors, Der Fliegende Hollรคnder, Hรคnsel und Gretel, and Thomas Adรจs' iconic opera, Powder Her Face.
In 2019, Paul directed a community production of Carmen for Oxford Opera, returning there for La Bohรจme and The Magic Flute.
In 2021, he directed an open-air production of Peter Grimes on the beach at Paesens-Moddergat in the north of the Netherlands.
Most recent productions include Rossini's Armida and Il Barbiere di Siviglia at the Teatru Manoel in Valletta, and a double bill of Cavalleria Rusticana and Suor Angelica at the Dorset Opera Festival last year, followed by Madama Butterfly for the Celebrate Voice Festival in Salisbury.
In 2025, he directed a sold-out production of Cavalleria Rusticana in a vast haulage warehouse in Friesland, followed by Cosรฌ fan tutte in February 2026 for the International Opera Academy in Belgium.
